Forecast / Actual Comparison

Now that the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics have concluded, we can compare the forecast made at the end of January 2022 based on the results from the 2021/22 World Cup and the World Championships preceding the Olympics.

This table allows us to verify the relevance of the forecasting model. It appears that in many cases, the number of medals is close to reality.

  • 37.5% of nations won medals with a difference of +/- 0.5 medals between forecast and actual.

  • 50% of nations won medals with a difference of +/- 1 medal between forecast and actual.

  • 75% of nations won medals with a difference of +/- 2 medals between forecast and actual.

  • All medal-winning nations were identified.

  • Only 3 nations identified in the forecast did not win medals.

It also allows for the analysis of nations that have over-performed or under-performed compared to the results of previous competitions.
